(I) Providing a forum for the exchange of ideas and research information on Renewable and Alternative Energy Resources and Technologies in Nigeria and beyond. (II) Encoraging collaboration among scientists, engineers, technologists in the field of Renewable and Alternative Energy Resources and Technologies. (III) Creating awareness of the enormous potentials of Renewable and Alternative Energy Resources in Nigeria in ameliorating Nigeria’s energy challenges. (IV) Organizing conferences, workshops in Renewable and Alternative Energy resources and technologies. (V) The membership of the Society is open but not limited to individuals and cooperate bodies in sciences, Engineering, Agriculture, etc.

The University began functioning at a temporary site, now referred to as the City Campus. Student enrolment began in October 1977 in the Faculties of Arts and Islamic Studies (now split into the Faculties of Arts and Faculty of Arabic and Islamic Studies in 2019, respectively), Social Sciences, Education and Extension Services, and Science (now split into the Faculty of Chemical and Life Sciences and Physical and Computing Sciences in 2019), Teaching began on October 20, 1977, with 93 undergraduate students and 102 students enrolled in the pre-degree program. Movement to the Main Campus began in 1982. The Postgraduate School (now the College of Postgraduate Studies) was also established in 1983. By 1985, the number of Faculties had increased to eight with the establishment of the College of Health Sciences, Faculties of Law, Agriculture, and Veterinary Medicine. With the subsequent establishment of the Faculties of Management Sciences and Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2002 and 2007, respectively, as well as the School of Medical Laboratory Science in 2002, and the Basic Medical Sciences and Basic Clinical Sciences in the College of Health Sciences in 2016 and 2017, respectively, the number of faculties grow. The addition of Faculty of Engineering and Environmental Sciences in 2017, Dental Sciences in 2019, and Allied Health Sciences in 2020 brought the number o faculties to sixteen (16) plus two (2) schools, with 98 full-fledged academic Departments and eighty-two (82) academic programs. The University has sixteen (16) Centres, Research Centres and Institutes. As of 2024, the University had a total population of 21,539 undergraduate students, 1498 postgraduate students, 249 sub-degree programs students and 606-pre- degree students, giving a total students population of 23,892. The University at present runs 259 postgraduate programs (95 PhD, 31 MPil, 118 Masters’ programs and 15 post graduate diploma programs). The staff strength of the University rose from 48 (academic, technical, and administrative) in 1977 to 1263 academic staff on various appointments (full-time, sabbatical, contract or visiting) and 1913 others (administrative and technical) in 2024.
